Birgi History

The traces of the settlement in the region where the ancient city of Hypaipa is located can be traced back to 3 thousand BC. After being under the rule of Phrygian, Lydian, Persian, Bergama and Roman, Birgi region ruled to the Byzantine Empire. It was called Pyrgion or Pyrgi (Dioshieron and Chrisopolis) as a fortress-city on a high position overlooking the plain in the hands of Byzantium. Turning into a metropolitan center in 1193-1199, Pyrgion was probably captured in 1304, after the Catalans who were sent to the region by the Byzantines, by Sasa Bey, the son-in-law of Menteşe Bey, who was active in the region, in the late 13th century. Aydınoğlu Mehmed Bey, who participated in the expedition, captured this place in 1307 and made it the center of the principality he founded. He had a mosque, tomb and madrasah built here in 1312. The region under his rule began to be called Memleket-i Birgi. Birgi was abandoned to the Ottomans by Isa Bey by 1391. However, after the Battle of Ankara, in which the Ottomans were defeated, it fell into the hands of Aydınoğulları again. During the reign of Murad, the city definitely came under Ottoman rule.

Birgi, which remained under Ottoman rule for more than five centuries, was under Greek occupation between 1919-1922. Most of the structures in Birgi were destroyed by burning during the withdrawal of the Greek Army. The most important historical monument of Birgi that survived the destruction is the Mehmed Bey Mosque and Tomb, also known as the Ulucami. In addition to Aydınoğlu Mehmed Bey, there are graves belonging to Umur Bey, İsa Bey and Sahadır Bey in the tomb. Among the other important monuments, the Derviş Ağa Mosque, which Evliya Çelebi mentioned, as well as the Kurşunlu Mosque and Karaoğlu Mosque are still standing.
