İZMİR TIME MACHINE

Development Process

İzmir Time Machine is a multi-layered project uniting various academic disciplines, including prehistory, classic archaeology, art history, modern history, and history of architecture with a variety of expertise such as three-dimensional modeling, web technologies, photography, graphic design, and video-production.

Academic Research

The entire literature on the 8500-year archaeological and historical existence of İzmir was reviewed in consultation with academicians of each respective discipline to create visual and written content for the project.

Organizing Big Data

Thousands of pages of academic publications, books, newspaper archives, photographs, postcards, illustrations, maps, and web sites were reviewed and the culminated big data was classified to produce sources for the project.

Three-Dimensional Modeling

Three-dimensional models were created of cultural heritage sites in five different locations from five different time periods, namely the Yeşilova Höyük, Old Smyrna Höyük, Ancient City of Smyrna, 18th-century Kemeraltı, and early-20th century İzmir port.

Web Publishing

The three-dimensional content produced as part of the project was optimized for online publishing using WebGL technology. The coding process of the website followed modern web technologies.

İzmir Time Machine project aims to revive İzmir's thousands of years of archaeological and historical heritage in three dimensions through rigorous academic data and to introduce the resurrected content on the internet using contemporary web technologies. The first stage of the project focused on İzmir city center and academicians in each related discipline, as well as content creators, united to complete the initial phase following a year and a half of intense study.
